‘Once you are in, it’s really quick’

THE new green waste site had its first real test at the weekend, as gardeners got to work in the dry weather.

There were queues of up to 15 minutes on Sunday morning, but many who had waited said they still preferred the new site.

Staff said the site had been running smoothly and that feedback from customers had been generally very positive.

Scott and Jess Le Page were on their second trip of the weekend.

‘We didn’t have to queue at all on Saturday, but today it has been about 10 minutes,’ said Mr Le Page.

‘I really prefer it to the old site, even with it being busy and there being a little bit of a queue. It’s a lot more efficient and cleaner. The old site could be a bit crazy. It is good they have done something useful with this old piece of land.’

Another man who had queued for 10 minutes said he had anticipated more traffic in the good weather and that it would take a lot longer to get through the gates.

‘It’s not half as bad as I thought it would be. After all, it has been perfect gardening weather. Once you are in, it’s really quick,’ he said.

‘I think it will get quicker as staff and the general public get used to it.

‘If they can open later, that would be handy, and then you could garden a little later in the day.’

The States Trading Supervisory Board intends to extend weekend opening hours until 6pm, but initially the site is able to open only until 4pm on Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays, as current planning permission restricts operating hours on those days.
