Scouts have a heap of fun building a bonfire

Four hours, a heap of pallets and a group of Scouts was what it took to build the bonfire for this year’s 2nd Guernsey Scout Group’s Bonfire Night celebrations.

On Wednesday evening, the carefully assembled pile of pallets will be set alight with a Guy Fawkes on top.

‘It has been done mainly over two of our Friday evening sessions, so about four hours,’ said 2nd Guernsey Scout Group lead volunteer Ben Moore.

The pallets for the bonfire have been donated over the course of the year.

‘They are mainly from electrical wholesalers,’ said Mr Moore. ‘That’s is all that is on the bonfire. That’s all we are allowed to put on.’

The 2nd Guernsey Scout Group have been celebrating Bonfire Night in this way for 30 years, with only one year having to be cancelled due to the weather.

‘Last year we had a sell-out, we have never had a year like that before,’ said Juliet Carre, 2nd Guernsey Scout Group lead volunteer.

The event went live last week and initial interest was strong – possibly fuelled by the fact that there are so few public displays nowadays.

Food starts being served at 5.30pm before the bonfire at 6.30 and a firework display at 7.00.

‘The Scouts will be able to help serve and we have a team of four or five men to run this firework display,’ said Mr Moore.

The Scouts display is the only public event on Bonfire Night itself. Organised private firework displays, with or without a bonfire, that have been advised to the States started at the weekend. There is one tomorrow and 28 scheduled for Wednesday.

There are another five on Friday, two on Saturday, and the final public session, organised by the Guernsey Rugby Club, on Sunday evening.
