Families and groups of friends turned out at Port Soif yesterday morning to start the 20km walk which raised money for some locally-registered charities and two international organisations that help communities all across the world.

This year’s event had already raised about £21,000 yesterday and that total was expected to increase.

‘We have had a really good turn out this year, there is about 1,400 taking part in the full, half and Herm walks this year,’ said Louise Smith, the marketing coordinator for the World Aid Walk.

‘We have also raised £21,000 but we expect it to reach £24,000. It has been really successful and the weather has definitely been holding up for us.’

Mrs Smith said that this year’s walk ‘could well be the biggest since the 50th’.

‘In terms of numbers this could definitely be the biggest,’ she said.

The walk raised money for charities including Action Aid, Christian Aid, the Tumaini Fund, This is Epic and The Eleanor Foundation

‘The money will be split across all of the charities,’ said Mrs Smith.

The Herm walk also took place yesterday.

‘The places for the Herm World Aid Walk sold really quickly, and we had a lot of people signing up before the event,’ said Mrs Smith.

The 20km walk was started by Overseas Aid Commission president Deputy Chris Blin and then physically started by the Bailiff at 10am.

A route that covered half the distance started later on in the day from Pembroke.

This year’s walk was sponsored by the Guernsey Overseas Aid & Development Commission and Specsavers. Rovers Athletic Club, which hosted the start and finish, and the Guernsey Prison also supported the event.
