Until recently the Batif Bureau de Change was based in the Guernsey Information Centre and the post office branch was based at the Market Street Coop.

But earlier this month the Coop postal branch closed and moved to the information centre.

As the postal counter from the old shop was moved into the new branch yesterday, the currency changes were announced.

‘Modifying the sale of foreign currency across all our branches allows us to centralise our compliance and our increasing regulatory responsibilities within this sector,’ Guernsey Post chief executive Boley Smillie said.

Foreign currency orders will now need to be made via telephone or online, with customers able to collect the orders from the Town Post Office, Guernsey Post’s headquarters at Envoy House, or selected branches across the island.

Alternatively, customers can use the company’s free home delivery service.

Currency orders over the counter will still be available from the L’Islet, Forest, and St Peter’s Post Office branches until the end of May.

This will leave Envoy House as the only place to order currency in person.

The new Post Office at the information centre is now settling in with the arrival of the counter.

Guernsey Post head of commercial Cassy Fish said the full suite of postal services was now available from the branch, including bill payments.

‘We are delighted with the new arrangement, and we have worked closely with the team at tourist information to really make the most of the space we are sharing for our town post office,’ she said.

‘We are really looking forward to serving our customers from here.’

  • Guernsey Post has struggled to get currency for Sweden, Norway, and Denmark, after restrictions were imposed by Scandinavian banking regulators. It is can currently buying and selling Swedish Krona, but this may change at short notice. It is unable to sell or buyback Danish Krone and Norwegian NOK at this stage.
